RESTORING BURNED AREAS IN CHIPINQUE ECOLOGIC PARK

On April 10, 1998, a forest fire started being completely extinguished by the 25 of the same month, and according to studies carried out by personnel from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, there were around 500 hectares affected classified as:

  • 100 high risk hectares (treetop fire)
  • 150 medium risk hectares (partial loss of vegetable coverage)
  • 250 low risk hectares (loss of herbaceous layer due to superficial fire)
  • Afterward and once the areas were evaluated to prevent the loss of land, the following activities were carried out:
    1. Construction of natural barriers.
    2. Construction of artificial barriers using wire mesh, rocks and pieces of wood.
    3. Planting native herbaceous and grain seeds.
    4. Intensive pruning of evergreen oak buds.
    5. Planting native conifers under strict supervision standards, in each and every one of the affected areas.
By December 2002, there were more than 100,000 (Pinus pseudostrobus) pine trees planted having a successful survival of 80%; their current growth is up to 1.50 m. tall.
